Everything You Need to Know About the Sand Dollar

The white disc on the beach is not a shell. It is the test, an internal skeleton, of a dead animal closely related to a sea urchin, and in life it was dark brown, purple, gray or green and furred all over with short moving spines. On this coast the five-slotted one is Mellita tenuis, not the Atlantic species most sources name, and a living one will stain your palm yellow within about a minute.

The White Disc Is Not a Shell

Pick a sand dollar off the sand and you are holding a skeleton. Not a shell. An echinoderm builds its hard parts inside its body, under the skin, as a porous meshwork of calcium carbonate. In a sand dollar those plates lock together into one rigid disc called the test. The test was never the outside of the animal. It was the frame underneath.

That is the whole difference between this and a snail shell. A snail's shell is secreted at its edge by a fleshy organ called the mantle, and the animal lives inside it. Nothing about a sand dollar works that way. The full story of how a mollusk builds its shell is on our how shells are made page.

So the bone white disc in your hand is a dead animal, not a house something moved out of. The skin, spines and soft tissue rotted off in the surf, and what stayed is the part strong enough to survive. Knowing that changes what you do when you find one that is not white.

The short version

What the Living Animal Actually Looks Like

A living sand dollar looks almost nothing like the souvenir. It is dark: brown, purple, gray or green, depending on the animal and the light. And it is not smooth. The entire surface, top and bottom, is covered in dense short spines that move.

Run a finger across a live one and it feels like felt, or a stiff velvet, and you can watch the pile shift under your fingertip. Those spines are the giveaway. A bare test is hard and finely stippled with the bumps the spines were attached to. A living animal still has the spines on the bumps.

Where you find them matters too. Live sand dollars are usually down in the sand rather than sitting on top of it, worked in flat or at an angle on a bank the tide has just uncovered. Something pale and loose on dry sand above the water line has almost always been dead a while. The Name Almost Every Source Gets Wrong

The five-slotted sand dollar of the Gulf of Mexico is Mellita tenuis H. L. Clark, 1940. Its type locality, the place the name is anchored to, is Sanibel Island, a Gulf beach a couple of hours up the coast from here.

What you will read almost everywhere else is Mellita quinquiesperforata. That name belongs to the Atlantic coast species. It is the wrong name for a Gulf beach, and it sits on museum labels, gift shop signage, tour company pages, field guides and most of the first page of search results. The two animals look similar, the older name is far better known, and popular writing copies popular writing. That is usually all it takes.

One more thing if you go checking names yourself. MolluscaBase is the standard authority for mollusk names, and it is the right place to settle an argument about a whelk or a conch. It will not help you here, because a sand dollar is not a mollusk. For an echinoderm you want the wider World Register of Marine Species, of which MolluscaBase is one part.

The Five Petals Are for Breathing

The flower figure on top of the test has a name: the petalodium. Each petal is built from small paired pores in two rows, longest in the middle and shortening toward the tip. There are five because echinoderms are built on five-part symmetry.

Those pores are not decoration and they are not a mouth. In the living animal, flattened tube feet push out through them. They are thin, broad, and sit in the water. That is a gas exchange surface. The petals are how the animal breathes.

This part gets explained wrong more than any other, so be blunt about it. The petals are not where it eats. They are not where the spines come from. They are not an Easter lily, whatever the gift shop card says. They are the closest thing a sand dollar has to gills.

How It Eats, and How It Moves

The mouth is on the underside, dead center. A sand dollar feeds on very fine material: organic particles, single-celled algae, the edible film coating sand grains. It sorts that out with its spines, and fine grooves on the underside carry it inward to the mouth on a thread of mucus. Slow, continuous, unglamorous eating.

Movement works the same way, from the bottom up. The underside spines act as thousands of tiny legs. They push the animal along and, when it wants to go under, tip it edge first and work it down into the sand. Not fast, but not stuck either.

Young ones have a trick worth repeating. Juvenile sand dollars swallow sand grains and keep them as ballast, weighting themselves so a current cannot roll them away. A small flat animal in moving water has a real problem staying put, and it solves it by eating rocks.

What the slots are for is less settled than most writing admits. They have been explained as a way of shedding lift so flow cannot pick the animal up, and as channels that move food across the body. We would rather say the question is still argued than hand you the tidiest sounding answer.

The Doves Inside a Broken One

Shake a broken test and something rattles. Open it and five small white pieces fall out, each shaped a little like a bird with folded wings.

Those are the five jaw elements of Aristotle's lantern, the feeding apparatus inside the animal around its mouth. Sea urchins have the same structure, which tells you which family this animal belongs to. In a sand dollar the lantern is flattened, like everything else about it. When the test dries and the connective tissue lets go, the pieces come loose and knock around inside.

Folklore calls them doves. It is one of the rare cases where the poetic name describes something real: they do look like small birds, there are five, and they are released when the test breaks. What they are not is a mystery. They are teeth.

Alive or Dead: The Ten Second Test

You do not need to guess. Four checks, in order, about ten seconds.

  • Color. Brown, purple, gray or green means alive, or very recently dead. Bone white or pale tan means the animal is long gone.
  • Fuzz. A live animal is covered in short dense spines. A clean test is smooth and finely stippled where the spines used to attach.
  • Motion. Set it flat on a wet palm and watch the underside for half a minute. Live spines and tube feet move, slowly, but they move.
  • The stain. This is the fastest field test there is. A live sand dollar leaves a yellow stain on your palm within about a minute. The pigment is echinochrome, it is harmless to you, and a white test will never do it.

If two of the four say alive, treat it as alive. A freshly dead animal can still have spines and color and not move at all, which is exactly the case people get wrong. Being wrong one way costs you a souvenir. Being wrong the other way costs an animal.

What to Do When It Is Alive

Put it back, in the water, on sand, flat side down, and let it settle. Do not toss it. Do not carry it up the beach for a photograph and walk it back. Do not set it on a towel in the sun to see what happens.

Aboard our boat the rule is simple and it is our own: empty shells only. No live shells, no live sand dollars, no debate about whether a particular one looks mostly dead. We keep it because it is the only version that is easy to follow with wet hands and children on board.

On City of Marco Island beaches it also happens to be the law. City code section 54-36(o) prohibits live shelling, and section 54-36(k) separately prohibits removing sand, worth knowing if you were planning to take a scoop home in a jar.

The Relatives People Confuse It With

Sand dollars are echinoderms in the class Echinoidea, the sea urchins. They are what zoologists call irregular urchins: the body has flattened and the symmetry has slid toward a front and a back. A sand dollar is, roughly, a sea urchin that lay down, spread out and moved into the sand. Sea stars are a different class entirely, much further off on the family tree than the resemblance suggests.

Three things get called sand dollars that are not, or not the one you think.

  • Sea biscuits in the genus Clypeaster are close kin but not sand dollars. They are thick and domed rather than flat, and not pierced through. The name "Inflated" belongs to one of them, Clypeaster rosaceus, not to any sand dollar.
  • The notched sand dollar, Encope michelini, is a real and separate animal. Notched Sand Dollar is the common name US Fish and Wildlife Service uses for it. Its margin is notched rather than pierced by clean enclosed slots.
  • "Arrowhead" is not a name. It is a vendor nickname applied inconsistently to more than one animal, so it tells you nothing about what you actually bought.

And if you find a disc with six slots instead of five, you are not holding a Mellita at all. Most references call that one the six-holed sand dollar. Rather than hand you a scientific name we have not checked against a primary source, we would point you at a museum collection such as the Florida Museum's invertebrate zoology.

The Ones That Are Not Florida Animals

Two sand dollars turn up constantly in craft supplies, classroom kits and gift shop bins. Echinarachnius parma is a northern species. Dendraster excentricus is a Pacific one. Neither occurs in Florida. A bag of "Florida sand dollars" that is unnaturally uniform and perfectly whole is worth a question about where it came from.

That mix-up matters for a reason beyond provenance, because two of the most repeated sand dollar facts on the internet come from the Pacific animal.

The first is lifespan. The well-documented figure of roughly thirteen years comes from work on Dendraster excentricus. The second is stranger and better: research on that same Pacific species found that its larvae, on detecting a chemical cue from a predator, can clone themselves and split into smaller copies that are harder to find and harder to catch.

Both are real results. Both were done on an animal that does not live in the Gulf of Mexico. Nobody has run the equivalent study on ours, so how long Mellita tenuis lives on this coast is, as far as we can find, unmeasured. When you see thirteen years quoted on a Florida page, that number traveled a long way to get there.

Why They Break

A sand dollar is a wide, thin, rigid plate, which is close to the worst possible shape for surviving surf. Bending stress concentrates across the middle. Sand grinds the edge. A wave flips it, drops it on a shell, and it cracks along the sutures where the plates meet.

It gets worse after death. In life the test is bound and supported by living tissue. Once that is gone, the joins between plates have nothing but the calcium carbonate itself, and a test that has rolled in the swash for a week is often fractured inside before anything shows outside. That is why one that looked perfect on the beach comes apart in a pocket.

If you find a whole one, treat it like an egg. Carry it flat on an open palm, not in a fist. Keep it out of a bag with heavy shells, which will do more damage in ten minutes than the surf did in a week. And accept that a whole test is genuinely uncommon, which is most of the reason anyone cares about finding one.

Cleaning It, Hardening It, and Why It Goes White

The white comes from time. A living sand dollar is dark because of pigments in its tissue, echinochrome among them. When it dies, the skin and spines break down and wash away, the pigment goes with them, and sun and seawater finish what is left. A recently dead test is often gray or dull tan and keeps paling for days. White is the end of a slow bleaching, not a color the animal ever was.

To clean one, rinse it and then soak it in fresh water for a few hours, changing the water once or twice to pull the salt out. Salt left in a test blooms back to the surface later. Dry it flat, out of direct heat, and give it longer than you think it needs.

Two things we do not do. We do not use vinegar on anything: acetic acid dissolves calcium carbonate, which is what the test is made of. And we avoid bleach. On mollusk shells it destroys the periostracum, the protein skin, and can damage color and structure, and on a test a long soak buys little that a week on a sunny windowsill will not.

Hardening is the last question people ask. The common method is to brush or dip the dry test in white glue thinned with water, which soaks in and holds the plates together. It works, and if you want an ornament that survives a suitcase, do it. Just understand the trade. Like oiling a shell, it is not reversible, and a glued test is a decoration rather than a record. The Law on Sand Dollars, Answered Honestly

Start with the sentence that governs everything. Florida statute 379.101(34) defines "saltwater fish" to include living mollusks and echinoderms, and expressly excludes nonliving shells. A sand dollar is an echinoderm. So a live one is regulated the way a fish is, and taking it requires a Florida recreational saltwater fishing license. An empty test is not saltwater fish at all and needs no license.

Now the part we cannot answer for you. Whether any numeric collecting limit applies to sand dollars in Florida is genuinely unsettled. Two independent readings of the rules came back disagreeing with each other. We are not going to publish a number, because a confidently published wrong number is exactly how bad shelling facts spread. We have asked FWC in writing, and when the agency answers we will put that answer on this page. If you have a primary source that settles it, tell us.

You can see why we are careful. The most copied wrong fact in shelling content is "two live shells per species per person, four per vessel". That is not Florida law. It traces to a Lee County ordinance repealed in 2002, and it is still quoted as state law today.

Three places where nothing is ambiguous. Florida State Parks prohibit removing shells, sand, rocks or marine animals from any park area, empty shells included. Collecting is prohibited outright in Everglades National Park and in Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. And on our boat, whatever the state eventually tells us, the rule stays empty shells only.

The Legend, and What Other Coasts Call Them

A verse circulates on printed cards in gift shops all over Florida, reading the sand dollar as a Christian symbol. In it the slots are wounds, the petal figure is an Easter lily on one face and a poinsettia on the other, and the five jaw pieces that fall from a broken test are doves released. We are not going to reprint it. Its authorship is genuinely unknown, so its copyright cannot be cleared, and we do not print other people's work without knowing whose it is.

Describing it is fair, and it is worth describing, because that legend is why a lot of people pick up their first one. The animal underneath is not diminished by it. The wounds are slots whose function is still argued over. The lily is a breathing organ. The doves are teeth. All of that is stranger than the story, and both can sit in your hand at once.

The names travel too. In southern Africa the local one is a pansy shell. In New Zealand you will hear sea cookie and snapper biscuit. Sand cake shows up in several places. And "sea biscuit", which sounds like a nickname, is in Florida a different animal in a different genus. Common names are local, unregulated and cheerfully contradictory, which is the whole argument for learning the scientific one.
