The Murexes and Drills
Muricidae is the family of murexes, rock snails and oyster drills: predatory sea snails that get into other shells by boring a hole through them, using a rasping tongue and an acid-secreting gland on the foot in alternation. On this coast the family shows up mostly as small ribbed drills rather than the big showpiece murexes people picture. It is also the family behind Tyrian purple, the ancient world's most expensive dye, made from three Old World species, one of them in the same genus as our own Florida Rocksnail.
The Hole Is the Family's Signature
Pick up enough shells on this coast and eventually one of them has a neat round hole punched through it. Something drilled that. It was not wear, it was not a rock, and it was not a bird. A snail spent hours or days working through that wall to get at what was inside.
Two groups do most of the drilling in shallow Gulf water. The moon snails are one. The murexes and drills, family Muricidae, are the other, and they are what this page is about.
You can sometimes tell the two apart from the hole itself. A moon snail bores a beveled, countersunk hole, wider at the outside than the inside, cut the way a hole is countersunk for a flathead screw. A murex bores a straighter-sided one. That distinction is standard and it is real, but it breaks down on thin shells, where there is not enough wall depth for a profile to show. It sits with the rest of the construction on how a shell is made.
The hole is this family's calling card. Everything else about a murex shell, the ribs, the spines, the long canal at the front, follows from being a heavy-shelled animal that has to sit still and work.
The short version
- Muricidae Rafinesque, 1815 is accepted by the World Register of Marine Species under AphiaID 148, with 11 accepted subfamilies and the listed vernacular names murex snails, murex shells and rock shells.

- Three Old World species produced the ancient royal purple: Bolinus brandaris, Hexaplex trunculus and Stramonita haemastoma. No Florida murex has any documented role in that history.
- A 2025 paper in PLOS ONE describes an excavated purple dye facility at Tel Shiqmona on Israel's Carmel coast that operated from roughly 1100 to 600 BCE, with over 1,000 shells, 135 dye-stained artifacts and at least 38 dye vats.
Two Tools, Used in Turn
Drilling is not one action. It is two, alternating.
The first tool is the radula, the toothed ribbon nearly every snail carries. In a drill it works like a rasp, taking off mechanically whatever it can reach.
The second is the part most people have never heard of. On the underside of the foot, murexes carry a gland called the accessory boring organ, usually shortened to ABO. The snail presses it against the spot it is working, and the gland secretes acid and enzymes that soften the shell material. Then the radula goes back to rasping. Rasp, soften, rasp, soften, until the wall gives.
That is the kind of tidy story that gets repeated without anyone checking it, so here is the check. In 1967, M. R. Carriker, D. Van Zandt and G. Charlton reported in Science the first continuous recording of pH from a working boring organ. A microelectrode sat inside an unfinished borehole in a glass-and-shell model while the animal kept working on it. The minimum recorded was 3.8. Before that, the secretion had been treated as neutral.
One honest note. That study was done on Urosalpinx cinerea, the Atlantic Oyster Drill, the species most boring research was done on and one with no confirmed occurrence in the Gulf of Mexico. The mechanism is a family mechanism. The animal in the experiment was not one of ours.
The Family Behind the Hole
Muricidae Rafinesque, 1815 is the formal name. The World Register of Marine Species, which for mollusks is the same database as MolluscaBase, accepts it under AphiaID 148. Eleven subfamilies are currently accepted inside it, and the vernacular names listed there are murex snails, murex shells and rock shells.
You will meet a species count for this family all over the internet, usually somewhere around seventeen hundred. We could not confirm it against a source we would stand behind, so we are not printing it. The family is large. That is as far as we go.
What unites it is not the look. A tropical Pacific murex with fronds like antlers and a small brown drill off a Southwest Florida oyster bar are both in it. What unites it is a way of living: they are carnivores, most of them get into other shells or into barnacles by boring, and the shell is equipment for that job rather than a house.
The word "drill" inside a common name is a strong hint you are holding a muricid. Nothing governs common names, so it is not a rule, but on this coast it holds up.
Varices, and Why Sharp and Blunt Can Be One Species
Run a thumb around a murex and you feel heavy raised ribs running down the whorl toward the front of the shell, usually three or more on every turn. Those are varices, and they are the most genuinely diagnostic feature the family has.
A varix is the record of a pause. A snail shell grows at its opening, so the leading edge is always the newest material. When a murex stops adding length and thickens and flares that edge instead, it builds a reinforced rim, then grows forward again and leaves the old rim behind as a rib. The spines and fronds on the showier species are extensions of those same varices, which is why they line up in rows rather than scattering.
The other family landmark is at the front: a siphonal canal, the trough or tube carrying the animal's breathing siphon, sometimes a short notch and sometimes longer than the rest of the shell.
Spines also wear off, which is where murex identification goes wrong most often. Cabrit's Murex is the clearest local case: beach specimens found here have worn, blunted spines, while the sharp-spined examples in collections and catalog photographs are dredged offshore. Sharp and blunt can be one species at different stages of a long afterlife, so trust what survives wear: varices per whorl, the shape of the aperture, the length of the canal.
One feature reads the other way, and it is about the animal rather than the beach. A thickened, flared outer lip usually means an adult that had stopped growing. These six are here because each has been checked: a currently accepted name and a real AphiaID, the number the World Register of Marine Species files a species under. Put a number into WoRMS and you land on the same record we did.

Two things this table is not. It is not a checklist of what you will find, because we do not promise a find of anything. And it is not a ranking: no source we used measured local abundance, so none carries a "common" or "rare" label.
Hold that note about winter storms loosely. Storms move enormous quantities of material and can bury a beach as readily as strip it, which is why our page on when to go looking declines to promise better shelling after weather.
A Drill, a Coquina, and a Food Web You Can Watch
Most predation writing stays abstract. This one does not have to.
The Mauve-mouth Drill, Calotrophon ostrearum, is documented preying on Coquina. Coquina are the small fan-shaped bivalves that live by the thousand in the swash on beaches around Marco Island and Goodland, the ones that dig back under after every wave. Some get eaten by a snail from this family.
Which gives you something specific to look for. Coquina come in an enormous range of colors and ray patterns, all of it a single species, so color tells you nothing. A hole tells you something. Sort a handful of Coquina valves out of the wrack line and look for a small, round, clean perforation with intact surface around it. Nothing about tumbling in the surf produces that.
Barnacles, oysters and other clams are on the family's menu as well. What we cannot tell you is how much of it happens on a given flat in a given week. Nobody has published that for this coast, and we would rather leave the gap visible than fill it with a number that sounds good.
Egg Capsules Shaped Like Amphorae
Murexes do not scatter their eggs into open water. They lay them inside tough capsules, glued down in clusters on hard surfaces, and the capsules are distinctive enough to be identified in their own right.
The published comparisons are unusually vivid, and they are accurate. Some drill capsules look like miniature amphorae, the two-handled storage jars of the ancient Mediterranean. Others look like tiny champagne goblets on short stems. Once you have seen a cluster you will not mistake it, and clusters turn up stuck to shell, rock and other hard surfaces.
One detail matters for the next few sections. The Florida Rocksnail's egg capsules are pigmented on the inside, burgundy to purple. That is a documented feature of the animal, not a trick of the light.
Hold onto that. A purple pigment inside a muricid is the thread that runs from a Southwest Florida oyster bar back to the most expensive material in the ancient world.
The Dye That Came Out of a Gland
Three Old World muricids were the source of the ancient world's royal purple: Bolinus brandaris, Hexaplex trunculus and Stramonita haemastoma. Three species, one family.
The dye comes out of a gland in the snail. The compound is 6,6'-dibromoindigo, which is indigo carrying two bromine atoms, and getting it from the animal into cloth was a process rather than a squeeze. One version of it survives in Pliny the Elder: the extracted material was salted, left to steep for days, then boiled.
The economics are the part everybody remembers, and they need an attribution rather than a flat assertion. A historian's estimate, widely repeated since, puts it at roughly twelve thousand snails for about 1.4 grams of pure dye, enough to trim one garment rather than color one. That is reasoned backward from the process, not copied off an ancient invoice, and it deserves to be read that way.
Price followed scarcity, and law followed price. By the late Roman Empire the color was restricted to the emperor, which is where the phrase "born to the purple" comes from. A dye pressed out of a sea snail's gland became a legal definition of who was allowed to be in charge.
Tel Shiqmona: Five Centuries of It, Excavated
For most of the time people have been writing about royal purple, the evidence has been indirect: ancient texts, heaps of crushed shell, surviving cloth. In 2025, a paper in PLOS ONE by Shalvi, Sukenik and colleagues put an actual working site on the table.
The site is Tel Shiqmona, on the Carmel coast of Israel. What was excavated there is not a household making a little dye on the side. It is a production facility, and by the paper's reckoning it ran from roughly 1100 to 600 BCE. Five centuries of the same specialized industry in the same place.
The material carries the argument. More than a thousand shells. A hundred and thirty-five artifacts stained with purple pigment, part of a larger set of production finds including grinding stones and vats. At least thirty-eight individual dye vats. The team ran chemical, mineralogical and contextual testing to tie those categories together, the step that turns a pile of stained pottery into evidence of a process. Their own claim is that this is the first unequivocal case of large-scale purple production sustained for half a millennium anywhere in the Mediterranean.
What makes it worth a section on a shelling site is the scale it implies. Every one of those shells was an animal somebody gathered, opened and processed. Run the arithmetic from the previous section across five hundred years and you get some sense of what a color used to cost.
The Honest Local Bridge, and Where It Stops
This is where a lot of shell writing gets sloppy, so we will be careful with it.
One of the three historical dye species, Stramonita haemastoma, is a Mediterranean animal. Our Florida Rocksnail is Stramonita floridana. Same genus, different species, genuinely close relatives. That is a real connection rather than a stretched one.
The Florida Rocksnail also makes purple pigment: its egg capsules are pigmented burgundy to purple inside. So a genuine relative of a genuine dye snail, living on this coast, does produce a purple color.
Here is where the story stops, and each of these limits matters.
- No Florida murex has any documented history of being used to make dye. Not the rocksnail, not the Giant Eastern Murex, not any drill on this page. The ancient industry was an Old World industry working Old World species.
- Pigment in an egg capsule is not a dye works. The animal is doing something biological with that color, and that is a different question from what an Iron Age dyer was doing.
- We are not suggesting you test it. Emptying live snails to see what color comes out is not shelling. The rule aboard our boat is empty shells only, and it is our own rule rather than a statute.
The honest version is good enough without the extra step. This family made the color that defined imperial power, and a close cousin of one of the animals that did it lives in the water off Southwest Florida.
The Giant Eastern Murex Is Probably Not Here
Search for murex shells and Florida together and the Giant Eastern Murex dominates the results. It is the big, heavy, frilled one everybody pictures. We are not going to tell you it is a Marco Island find, because the range data does not support it.
Its documented Gulf range runs from Texas around to Cedar Key, and Cedar Key is roughly two hundred miles north of here. It is also absent from the regional shell guide's list for this stretch of coast. Two independent signals pointing the same direction is enough for us to say so plainly.
Could one turn up anyway? Range maps have edges and edges are fuzzy, and a shell travels after the animal is finished with it. What we will not do is put a species into your expectations because it photographs well. If you find something large, heavy and frilled here, photograph both sides with something in frame for scale, note the date and the beach, and get it checked rather than named on the spot.
The same discipline runs in reverse. Plenty of shells sold in Florida gift shops are Indo-Pacific animals that never lived within a thousand miles of this coast. Where a shell was bought is not where it lived.
Names Move, and How to Check One
Muricid names have been unusually busy, and anyone working from an older field guide will run into it.
The Lace Murex is the example worth knowing. The binomial in wide circulation for it, Chicoreus dilectus, is not the currently accepted name. The accepted name is Chicoreus florifer. Nothing about the animal changed. A judgment about which published name has priority changed, and the popular literature caught up unevenly.
That is why this page prints an AphiaID next to every species. A common name can be attached to two animals and a binomial can be superseded. The AphiaID is a stable handle on a record, and the record carries the accepted name, the synonyms it has been through, and who published what.
The method, if you want to check anything here or anywhere else:
- Start with the name you have, from whatever book, label or shop tag it came from.
- Look it up in MolluscaBase, the mollusk-specific part of the World Register of Marine Species, which is the authority this site follows.
- Read the record. It will either confirm the name as accepted or send you to the accepted one and tell you why.
An out-of-date name in a good old field guide is not an embarrassment. It is a timestamp.
Reading a Murex on the Beach
What to do with one in your hand, in order.
- Count the varices. Three or more heavy ribs per whorl, running down the whorl rather than around it, puts you in this family.
- Look at the front end. A well-marked siphonal canal, short or long, is the second landmark. On a Rose Murex it is where the spines survive.
- Read the lip. Thick and flared means an adult that had stopped growing. Thin and sharp means it was still growing.
- Discount the spininess. Beach wear takes the points off, so sharp and blunt can be the same species.
- Look for the hole. Not on the murex, on the clam and oyster valves lying around it. That is where this family leaves its record.
If you keep one, label it. Locality, date, habitat, collector. A shell without that is a decoration and a shell with it is data. The rest is on starting a collection.
Two things from our side of the rail. Empty shells only aboard our boat, as our own house rule. And several of the islands we run to sit inside Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, whose collecting rule appears stricter than that. We have asked the Reserve in writing and have no answer yet, so we will not tell you where you may fill a bag.

On a very thin shell the hole tells you it was drilled and then goes quiet about who did it.
Are there murex shells on Southwest Florida beaches?
Yes, though mostly the small ones rather than the showpieces. The Gulf Oyster Drill and the Rose Murex have both been photographed alive on Kice Island, next to Marco. The Sharp-rib Drill is described in the regional guide as not uncommon on barrier island beaches. We will not promise you a find of any of them, and we have not ranked them by abundance because no source we used measured that.
Is the Giant Eastern Murex found near Marco Island?
Probably not, despite how often the two get mentioned together. Its documented Gulf range runs Texas around to Cedar Key, about two hundred miles north of here, and it does not appear on the regional shell guide's list for this stretch of coast. Treat a big frilled murex found locally as a shell that needs checking rather than a name you can assign on the beach.
Did Florida murex snails make Tyrian purple?
No. The ancient dye came from three Old World species: Bolinus brandaris, Hexaplex trunculus and Stramonita haemastoma. The honest local connection is a family one. Our Florida Rocksnail, Stramonita floridana, is in the same genus as the third of those, and its egg capsules are pigmented burgundy to purple inside. That is a relative producing a purple pigment, not a documented history of Florida shells being used for dye.

Is it legal to collect murex shells in Florida?
No murex is on FWC's restricted marine life list, which contains only two shell groups, the starsnails and the Nassarius snails. The live-versus-empty distinction is what matters most: Florida statute treats a living mollusk as saltwater fish and an empty shell as not, so a live one brings licensing into it. Collecting is prohibited outright in Florida State Parks, Everglades National Park and Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge. Check FWC before you collect anything.
