Displaying Sand Dollars Without Breaking Them

A sand dollar that survived the boat and the drive home has already cleared the easy part. What destroys a displayed test over the following years is handling, light and humidity swings, in that order, and a good display is simply a device for reducing all three at once. Lay it flat, never glue anything directly to the test, keep it off the windowsill and out of the bathroom, and choose your box materials with Byne's disease in mind, because that one is chemistry rather than anything alive.

Most sand dollars are lost at home, not on the beach

Everybody worries about the walk back. The disc rides in a hat or a shirt pocket, and the whole way to the car it is treated like something that might go off. Then it gets home, and the worrying stops.

That is backwards. A test that survived the boat, the bag and the drive has already cleared the hardest short-term thing that will ever happen to it. What breaks it is the next five years. Almost every one we hear about being lost was lost in a house.

Three things do nearly all of that damage.

  • Handling. The one that actually breaks them. A display gets picked up hundreds of times, and every pick-up is a chance to fail.
  • Light. Slow, invisible while it happens, and permanent.
  • Humidity swings. The one nobody expects, and the one that brings chemistry with it.

A display is not decoration. It is a device for reducing all three at once.

The short version

  • The test is a fused, plated internal skeleton roughly a millimeter thick. It is strong as a low dome under an even push and fails at a point load.
  • Byne's disease is an efflorescence caused by acidic vapor given off by storage materials, especially some woods and cardboards. It is chemistry, not a fungus.

Handling is the one that gets them

Ask anybody who has lost one and the story is the same. Somebody picked it up.

The reason is structural, and the page on why they break covers it properly. The short version: the test is a plated skeleton about a millimeter thick, shaped as a low dome. A low dome is good at spreading an even push and bad at absorbing a poke. Pinched between a thumb and a fingertip, it is being asked to do the one thing it cannot.

So the most useful feature of any display is that it removes the reason to pick anything up. Both faces visible, nothing hidden, enough light to read the petals without leaning in. If a guest has to lift a disc to see what is interesting about it, the display has already failed, and it will fail properly some evening when the room is full.

When something does have to move, move it flat, in two hands, over a table. Never over a floor.

Decide about hardening before you mount anything

One step belongs before the display and usually gets skipped: whether to consolidate the test at all.

The method this site publishes is ordinary white glue thinned heavily with water, and the page on hardening a sand dollar gives it in full, along with when it helps, when it yellows, and how to stabilize one that is already cracked. Read that first, because all of it is far easier to do to a loose disc than to one already fixed inside a box.

It is also a decision with a principle attached. Serious collections avoid consolidants for one reason: they are not reversible. Whatever you put into a test is in it. That is the same rule that governs oiling, which makes a specimen look better and is avoided precisely because you cannot take it back off.

Reversibility runs through the rest of this page. Ask it of every material you introduce. If this is a mistake in ten years, can it be undone?

The mounting rule: whatever holds it has to let go

Here is the whole of mounting, in one sentence. Whatever holds the test in place must come off later without taking the surface with it.

That rules out the obvious answer. Adhesive applied directly to the test is the thing to avoid, and it is what almost everyone reaches for first, because a dab on the back and a press against the board works immediately. What it does is bond to a chalky, porous surface a millimeter thick. When the day comes to move it, and that day always comes, the adhesive does not release. It brings a patch of the test with it, and that patch is the part that was against the board.

Better answers, in order of how little each commits to:

  • Gravity. A shallow tray, a well cut into the backing, or a flat surface with a lip. Nothing touches the disc except what it is lying on.
  • A cradle. A shaped recess, or a ring of soft inert padding that holds the disc by its outline instead of its face.
  • A capture. A thin padded band or fine wire crossing the disc and anchored to the backing on both sides, holding it down without bonding to it.
  • Adhesive to the backing only, so the sticky part is stuck to the board and the test merely rests against it.

Test any idea with one question. Can I get this out again in five minutes, without a tool and without a decision? If the answer involves solvent, pulling or luck, redesign it.

Shadow boxes, backing and depth

A frame built for photographs is the commonest mistake, and it is a depth problem. A sand dollar is not flat. It is a low dome with a raised center, and a shallow frame closes the glazing straight down onto the highest point of the test. The disc then carries a permanent point load from a sheet of glass, inside a box nobody will open for years. Some are found in pieces the next time the wall gets painted.

So the box has to be deeper than the disc is tall, with room left over, and nothing should touch the glazing. That is what a shadow box is for.

Backing deserves as much thought as the frame. It is the largest surface in the box and the closest to the specimen, and, as the next sections get into, some materials give off acidic vapor as they age. Choose it on what it is made of, not on what color it is.

One more thing, because it matters later. A sealed case is a small, still atmosphere with nothing to carry anything away: an advantage against dust and a liability against everything else.

Flat is safer than upright

Standing a sand dollar on its edge looks better. It is also the arrangement most likely to end badly, for three reasons that stack.

  • The load concentrates. Lying flat, the disc's weight spreads across its whole underside. Standing up, all of it runs through the short arc of rim touching the base.
  • It has to be held. Upright is not a stable position, so something must grip it: a clip, a slot, a stand with jaws, or, most often, glue. That drags you back into the mounting rule.
  • It falls further. A disc lying flat that gets knocked slides. A disc standing up tips onto its edge.

Lay them flat. If a display genuinely needs one piece standing, cradle a broad arc of the rim in a padded groove, tilt it back rather than setting it vertical, and keep it clear of doors and vents. Put your best one flat regardless. Upright is a place for a specimen you could stand to lose.

Light, and the worst place in the house

Pigments photodegrade. Light breaks them down, sunlight fastest, and nothing brings them back. That is the entire reason a sunny windowsill is the worst place in the house for anything you care about, and it is exactly where sand dollars end up, because a white disc on a bright sill looks wonderful for about a season.

A fresher test is not pure white. It carries whatever survived of the animal's color, and the page on why they turn white covers what that color is and why the whitest disc has been dead the longest. A sill takes that tint evenly enough that you will not notice until you set the disc beside one that lived in a drawer.

We will not hand you a light level, because we cannot verify one. The practical version needs no number.

  • An interior wall beats an exterior one.
  • Reflected daylight beats direct sun. Direct sun is the case to eliminate outright.
  • A sill also cooks. Glass builds heat through an afternoon, and heat drives the swings in the next section.
  • If the best-looking spot is the bright one, hang the display opposite the window instead of beside it.

Humidity swings, and the bathroom shelf

Humidity does not damage a test by being high. It damages it by moving.

Calcium carbonate lives with moisture more or less indefinitely as long as the moisture is steady. What it does not tolerate is cycling: damp, dry, damp, dry, often with salt still in the pores. Each pass drives moisture into the material and pulls it back out, working on whatever cracks are already there. On something a millimeter thick there is not much margin to spend.

Which is why a bathroom shelf is a poor idea, and it is a very popular idea, because the seashell and the bathroom go together in everybody's head. A bathroom is the most violently cycling room in a house: ordinary to saturated in ten minutes, twice a day, then dried out hard. A kitchen near the stove is second. A garage, an attic or an unconditioned porch is worse than either, because those add temperature swings on top.

You will not find a percentage here. We have not measured one, and a number copied from somewhere else would be false precision. An ordinary lived-in room, on an interior wall, away from the shower, the stove, the vent and the window, is already doing what a number would tell you to do.

Byne's disease is chemistry, not a fungus

This is the failure most people have never heard of, and it is the one that finds well-meaning displays.

It appears as a white, powdery, faintly crystalline bloom on the surface of a shell or a test. It looks organic, and the word disease is in the name. Both mislead, which is why people reach for treatments meant for something growing.

Byne's disease is chemistry, not a fungus. Nothing in it is alive and nothing spreads the way a mold spreads. It is an efflorescence: a salt crystallizing out on the surface, caused by acidic vapor given off by the materials the specimen is stored or displayed in. Some woods and some cardboards are the classic sources. The vapor comes off the material as it ages, reaches the calcium carbonate, reacts with it, and the product blooms out on the surface. The specimen is what is being consumed to make it.

Set that beside the section on shadow boxes. The environment that produces it is an enclosed case, built of the wrong material, holding humidity that rises and falls. A raw wooden box with a cardboard backing, sealed behind glass, on a wall that warms every afternoon, is close to a purpose-built machine for it.

Avoiding it is a materials decision, made once, before anything goes in the box.

  • Treat unfinished wood as suspect. Not every wood is a problem, and we will not publish a list we cannot back, but the risk is real enough that a sealed interior surface beats a raw one and a cured finish beats a fresh one.
  • Treat ordinary cardboard and unknown paperboard the same way. Acid-free board and paper exist for precisely this problem.
  • Prefer stable, inert things against the specimen: glass, metal, stable plastics, acid-free board, untreated cotton.
  • Do not seal a box you are unsure of. Ventilation lets the vapor leave. A tight case concentrates it.
  • Look once a year. Caught early it is a materials problem you fix by removing the source. Left for a decade it has been working on the surface the whole time.

Group it so that it teaches something

A row of identical white discs is wallpaper. Three discs arranged to answer a question is something people stand in front of. Pick the question first and let it decide the layout.

  • Both faces. The commonest and the best. One disc petals up, one turned over showing the mouth, the food grooves and the small opening near the rim that surprises everybody. Half of what is interesting about this animal is on the side nobody displays.
  • A size series. Smallest to largest, in a line. It shows growth better than any sentence about growth.
  • A wear series. A fresher test with some color left in it, then a chalk-white one, then one worn thin enough to pass light. That is the story of what the beach does, told in three objects.
  • The broken one. Do not throw away a test that came apart. It shows the wall thickness, and if the jaw elements are still loose inside, it shows those too. A display of perfect discs teaches nothing about how any of them are built.

Leave space between things. Crowding makes people lean in and reach, and reaching is the failure mode from the top of this page.

Labels turn a decoration into a record

The distinction is the whole hobby, and it costs almost nothing. A specimen without a label is a decoration. With locality, date, habitat and collector, it is data.

Four fields. Where it was found, as specifically as you can honestly say. The date. What it was lying on or in. Who picked it up. Thirty years later that is the difference between a nice white disc and the record of a particular morning on a particular flat.

  • Write it the day you find it. Memory for locality decays faster than anyone believes it will.
  • Do not write on the test. Ink on a porous calcium carbonate surface is not reversible, and it looks it.
  • Keep the label with the specimen, and pick the paper with the same care you gave the backing.
  • Do not guess a species to fill a line. "Sand dollar, five slots" beats a Latin name you are not sure of.

A child's display

A child who found a sand dollar does not want it curated. They want it to be theirs, and a display that is obviously an adult's project stops being interesting inside a week.

  • They choose what goes in. Including the chipped one, if the chipped one is what they carried. You are not building a reference collection here.
  • They write the labels. Their handwriting, their spelling. A date and a place in a seven year old's block capitals is worth more in twenty years than anything you could print.
  • Hang it low. Their eye level, not yours.
  • Give them one they are allowed to touch. Keep a handling specimen outside the display, ideally a broken one. Every rule about not picking things up survives better when there is one thing they may pick up.
  • No glue, so it can change. A tray or a set of wells means next summer's find goes in without a fight. A glued board says the display is finished, and to a child a finished display is a dead one.

Then let it sit a little crooked. The crooked one is the one that stays on the wall.

The ones you do not display

Most of them. Anyone who has been out more than a few times has more tests than wall space, and the ones in the box in the closet are the ones that quietly go to powder.

  • Store them properly, which is the same problem as displaying them. Every material rule above applies harder in a closed box, because a closed box is a smaller atmosphere. Acid-free board, padding so nothing rides against anything else, an interior closet rather than an attic or a garage, and a look once a year.
  • Photograph the good ones. A documentation photograph of both faces with a scale in the frame outlives the specimen and takes up no room. The page on photographing them covers raking light for the petals and why a phone in shade beats a phone in sun.
  • Give them away. A whole test with its label still attached, handed to somebody who has never held one, does more good than the eleventh one in your box.
  • Use the broken ones. They are the best teaching pieces you own and they cannot be broken further.
  • Take fewer next time. Not a lecture, just arithmetic. If nine in ten end up in a closet, the ninth and tenth were better off on the flat.
