The Cones: What a Harpoon Hunter Can and Cannot Do to Your Hand
Conidae is a single accepted family of predatory sea snails that kill by firing a hollow, barbed, disposable tooth loaded with peptide neurotoxins called conotoxins. The cones of Southwest Florida, including the alphabet cone and the Florida cone, are worm hunters, the guild whose documented human stings worldwide are consistently mild, and Florida's modern record contains one documented case. That is not a reason to handle one: the proboscis reaches nearly any part of the shell, there is no safe end to hold, and the correct rule is to assume a cone-shaped shell may be occupied and leave it where it lies.
What Makes a Cone a Cone
You can learn this family in one glance. A cone shell is biconic. The spire on top is a cone, the body whorl below it is a cone, and the two meet at a shoulder. Stand one on a table and it looks like an ice cream cone set back upright.
Turn it over for the second trait. The aperture is a long narrow slot running nearly the whole length of the shell, sometimes barely wide enough to admit a pencil. No flared lip, no toothed opening, nothing like the shelf a whelk builds when it stops growing.
Then the detail that surprises people. The operculum, the horny door most sea snails pull shut behind them, is present on a cone and is far too small to seal the opening. A cone snail is not an animal that shuts itself in.
One last trait matters to anybody who picks shells up. In life a cone wears a periostracum, the protein skin covered on our page about how shells are made, and on a cone it is often heavy enough to hide the color pattern almost completely. The drab brown shell in the shallows and the sharply patterned one in a display case are frequently the same species, one occupied and one long empty.
The short version

The Family That Did Not Split
Cones have been through a taxonomic argument worth knowing, because it explains how your field guide and a museum label can disagree while both are being careful.
The family is Conidae J. Fleming, 1822, AphiaID 14107 in the World Register of Marine Species, and it is accepted. In 2009 a proposal circulated to break the cones into four separate families. WoRMS and MolluscaBase considered it and did not adopt it. There is still one family, Conidae, with many genera inside it.
The genus-level half of that argument did land, and that is the part a reader meets. Shells printed as Conus in an older guide have since moved to other genera, Conasprella most visibly among them. So the honest summary is narrower than either headline: several familiar names have changed genus, and the family itself has not split.
Our own local example is the best one. The Florida cone is currently Conus anabathrum Crosse, 1865. For decades much of the literature called it Conus floridanus, and the name has genuinely moved back and forth. The current placement, held by WoRMS and MolluscaBase and supported by a 2024 study, is anabathrum. That is not sloppiness; it is what a name looks like while it is being tested, and it is why we cite MolluscaBase rather than whichever book is nearest.
The Cones of This Coast
These are the cones a Southwest Florida reader is most likely to meet, or to be handed by somebody else. Every name and number below comes from the World Register of Marine Species, and where a shell carries more than one name in circulation we use the accepted one.

Two notes on that table. The sourcing for cone occurrence here is regional, drawn from Southwest Florida and the eastern Gulf generally, not from a survey of any one beach. Nobody has published a Marco Island cone list, and we will not be the first to imply one exists.

The Harpoon, Not a Bite
Everything else in this family follows from one piece of equipment.
A cone snail does not bite. It fires. The radula, the ribbon of teeth most snails use as a rasp, has been rebuilt here into a magazine of single-use weapons, each tooth hollow, barbed and disposable. The snail extends a proboscis, a flexible tube that reaches well out from the shell, loads one tooth at the tip, and drives it into the prey. Venom travels down the inside of the tooth. The tooth is discarded and another is loaded.
The venom is a cocktail of small peptide neurotoxins called conotoxins. A single species can carry a large repertoire of them, and they work by shutting down nerve signaling fast enough that a soft-bodied animal cannot escape the hit.
Conotoxins are what cone venom is made of, and that is worth stating flatly, because popular writing about this family regularly names the wrong toxin: the one associated with pufferfish, a different compound made by entirely different animals. It is a substitution, not a synonym.
Hold on to the word proboscis. It is the reason the most repeated piece of cone-handling advice is wrong.
Three Guilds, and Why the Guild Is the Whole Story
Cones are specialists, and the family sorts into three feeding guilds by what they hunt: worm hunters, mollusk hunters and fish hunters.
That is a biological classification rather than a safety one, but the two line up, and the reason is not mysterious. Venom built to stop a polychaete worm inside a burrow is built for a worm. Venom built to stop a fish, an animal with a spine, muscle and a fast escape reflex, in the fraction of a second before it swims off, is built for a vertebrate. You are a vertebrate. That is the whole mechanism behind the risk difference, and it is why the sentence cone snails are dangerous carries almost no information.
The cones of this coast are worm hunters. The alphabet cone and the Florida cone are worm hunters, and the crown cone belongs to that group as well. The species with the frightening reputation, the ones a documentary means when it says cone snail, are fish hunters, and they are Indo-Pacific animals.
None of which is a permission slip.
The Handling Advice That Is Wrong
Search for cone snail safety and you will be told, in a lot of otherwise sensible places, to hold it by the narrow end, or by the back of the spire, as though the shell came with a handle out of range.
It does not. The proboscis is extensible, and it can reach around to nearly any part of the shell, including in fish-hunting species, which is precisely the group that advice exists to protect you from. A grip that feels clever is still a grip on a loaded animal.
The guidance that holds up comes from diving medicine, where clinicians have been treating this for decades: assume any cone-shaped shell might be occupied and alive, and do not pick it up at all. There is no safe end to hold. Divers Alert Network publishes it in about those words.
We like that rule for a second reason. It asks you to identify nothing: not a genus, not a feeding guild, not whether a shell is occupied, standing in moving water with wet hands and a child pulling at one arm. One shape recognition, one decision. Aboard our boat that is the rule, and it is not negotiable, for guests or for crew.
What the Sting Record Actually Says
The honest version of the risk is more interesting than the frightening version, and it comes out of a real dataset rather than a rumor.
Alan Kohn's 2019 review in the journal Toxins assembled the documented human envenomations by cone snails across the modern record: 141 cases spanning 1670 to 2017, involving 34 species. That is the population. Anything anyone says about how dangerous this family is has to answer to it.
What the record shows is concentration. The serious outcomes and the recorded deaths sit almost entirely with the fish-hunting species, and a single Indo-Pacific species, Conus geographus, accounts for the majority of both the stings and the deaths in the whole database. One species, out of a large family.
The worm hunters, the guild our local cones belong to, sit at the other end of that same record. Florida's Own Record, and the Number We Will Not Print
Florida's modern record of cone snail stings is one case.
In July 2017, in Key West, a person was stung by a crown cone, Conus regius. That is the entire documented modern Florida record in the literature we can check: one case, one species, one place. This coast has been shelled hard for generations. If cones were regularly hurting people here, that record would look different.
Now the number. You will find a fatality percentage attached to cone snails on a great many pages, usually a large one, usually stated with confidence. We are not printing it, in either direction, and the reasoning belongs in public rather than behind a request to trust us.
Those percentages describe the worst-case fish-hunting species, and they come out of old case counts that were small and biased toward the cases severe enough to be written up. A death gets recorded. A sting that stung and then stopped very often does not. Applied to the worm-hunting cones this page is about, such a number goes wrong in the dangerous direction twice: it overstates the risk in Southwest Florida, and by making the words cone snail sound uniformly lethal it flattens the one distinction that would matter to the same reader standing on an Indo-Pacific reef next year. The guild is the fact. The percentage is noise.
The Offshore Exception
One cone in the Gulf of Mexico is not a worm hunter, and leaving it out would be the kind of tidy omission this site does not make.
Conus ermineus, the turtle cone, is a genuine fish hunter, and its range does include the Gulf of Mexico. On paper that puts a higher-risk guild in our water.
The occurrence data is the part that matters to a visitor. It leans reef and deep water, not shoreline. This is an offshore and reef animal, and somebody wading a Southwest Florida flat is not the person likely to meet one. We name it because it exists, and because a page listing only the mild ones would be lying by arrangement rather than by sentence. Not so you start scanning the shallows for it.
And it changes nothing about what you do. Do not pick up a cone-shaped shell. That rule was written to work without you knowing which cone you are looking at, which is precisely the situation the turtle cone describes.
Telling an Occupied Cone From an Empty One
People ask for a field test, the way there is one for a sand dollar, and the answer here is different in a way that matters.
There are signals. A living cone usually looks drab, because the periostracum is covering the pattern, while a bleached, sharply marked shell has usually been empty a while. An occupied shell is heavier than an empty one of the same size, and it does not rattle or pour sand. Look into the aperture and you may see the small operculum, or tissue, or nothing readable at all.
Here is the problem with that list. Almost every check on it is easier with the shell in your hand, and picking it up is the exact thing the rule exists to prevent. A test you can only run by taking the risk is not a test.
So the sequence we teach is short and deliberately blunt. If it is cone-shaped, leave it. If you want a closer look, crouch and look at it where it lies. Being handed one by somebody else does not make it empty. And a shell on the flat can be occupied by an animal that did not build it, which is its own reason to let it stay put.
If Someone Is Stung
Take the low end of the risk seriously anyway, because two facts sit underneath all of it.
There is no antivenom for cone snail venom. Nothing neutralizes it. Care is supportive, which means the medical response is about keeping breathing and circulation going while the venom runs its course, not about reversing it.
A cone sting can be nearly painless and still be a serious envenomation. Divers Alert Network makes that point explicitly, and it is the one that catches people out, because it barely hurt is exactly the reason somebody decides not to get checked.
The first aid, consistently sourced across diving medicine and emergency reference:
- Get the person out of the water, and do not go back for the shell.
- Clean the puncture wound.
- Apply a pressure immobilization bandage, the technique intended to hold venom in the affected limb rather than let it move into central circulation, and keep that limb still.
- Go to an emergency department, regardless of how the site of the sting feels. Call 911 if breathing, speech, swallowing or vision are affected.
None of that needs a specialist to begin. It needs somebody to decide early, which is easier if they read this before the beach rather than after.
Three Ways a Snail Eats a Neighbor
Zoom out one level and the harpoon stops looking like a freak of nature and starts looking like one answer to a problem several families on this coast have each solved differently. That comparison is why the Shell Monographs are organized by family at all.
A murex or an oyster drill goes through the wall. It rasps with its radula and softens the shell chemically between bouts using a gland on its foot, and it takes hours to days. The evidence is the neat round hole in a clam valve you have almost certainly already picked up.
An olive hunts underneath the sand, plowing after small buried animals with its glossy shell wrapped in living mantle tissue.
A cone waits, then delivers a chemical solution through a hollow tooth in a fraction of a second.
Same problem in all three cases: how do you eat something armored, buried, or faster than you are. Three unrelated answers, all in the same square mile of sand. A shape stops being a curiosity and becomes the record of a strategy.
Cones, the Law, and Our House Rule
Cones deserve a legal paragraph, because the rules that touch them are not the ones most people expect.
Cones are not on FWC's restricted marine life list. That list contains only two shell groups, starsnails and Nassarius snails. Whelks, horse conch, olives, tulips, murexes, augers and cones are not on it. Check it yourself on FWC's own page, close to your trip rather than from any page written on a fixed date, this one included.
The line that does apply is the one the whole state runs on. Section 379.101(34) of the Florida Statutes defines saltwater fish to include living mollusks and expressly excludes nonliving shells. A live cone snail is saltwater fish, so taking one is fishing and requires a Florida recreational saltwater fishing license. An empty cone shell is not saltwater fish and needs nothing. Local layers sit on top. On City of Marco Island beaches, code section 54-36(o) is titled "No live shelling." Some islands in this area sit inside Rookery Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, whose rule is stricter than the statute's and which we are still confirming with the Reserve, so we publish no permission to collect at any named place.
Aboard our boat the rule is empty shells only. That is our own rule, not a statute. On a cone it is also the safety rule, a rare case of the two pointing the same direction.
The Venom That Became a Medicine
End on the part that gets left out of the frightening version.
Conotoxins are extraordinarily precise. Each one targets a specific channel or receptor in a nerve cell, which is what makes the venom fast and what makes it interesting to pharmacology: a molecule that hits one target and leaves everything else alone is what a drug designer wants and almost never gets.
One of them made it the whole way. Ziconotide, sold under the brand name Prialt, is derived from the venom of a cone species related to the ones surveyed on this page, and it is an FDA-approved medication for severe chronic pain. A drug on a shelf, developed from an animal most people know only as something that might hurt them.
That is the honest shape of this family. A cone snail is a specialist predator carrying a chemistry set worth respecting and worth studying, and, in Southwest Florida, considerably less likely to hurt you than the internet suggests. None of which changes what you do when you see a cone-shaped shell on the flat.
